Mavericks needed to take the Dragons by surprise and in the first quarter they did just that: the score line was 17-6 as Holly Nicols, Abi Ryan and Paula Gant made their debuts for this season at WA, GK and WD. Abi and Paula making the step up from the youth squad for this season. Paula Gant combined well with Debbie Jones and the Dragons could not dominate at the centre pass enabling there to be turnovers for the visitors; Holly taking a while to settle but then unleashed some definite moves and found both shooters on many occasions.

The Dragons regrouped in the second quarter and tightened up in defence; this was the point that Mavericks needed to stamp their authority; however still in the driving seat but too many errors allowed the home side to score some easy goals and by half time the score was 27-15. Jackson and Lonsdale brought Muller on at WA and Claire Higham came on at GK to settle the side. Siddall and Higham combined well at the back with Higham's quick hands making several tips; however Jones and Muller who looked so dominant on Saturday could not recreate their form and the errors crept in to the attack. Suddenly Dragons sniffed an opportunity and their experience blended with youth side took the match to Mavericks. With determination Mavericks continued to dominate in defence with Paula Gant showing signs that she has potential at this senior level. The final score line winning 43-36 with 70 shooting opportunities demonstrated that Mavericks can dominate in snippets but the skills need a lot more work on if there is to be a top performance played over 60 minutes.
