This was an important match for Mavericks - had progress been made when it came to match play? The answer was yes... over three quarters.
All the players stepped up a gear and dominated in all three thirds. This was an opportunity to play three different combinations for different purposes and enabled the coaching team of Jackson, Bird, Slawinski and Lonsdale to see how the players coped. Press and Wiseman demonstrated that their confidence was on the up and both put in performances that still have a long way to go but their vision and interplay was encouraging. The mid courters of Fitzgerald and Ricks were given their first run out of the season and neither were disappointing. They were both comfortable feeding the circle and Chrissy Firzgerald blended well with Holly Nicols to offer some great variation. Jenene Campbell back in the WD spot after being rested for the Welsh game worked towards turnovers and she was on several occasions was able to drive the ball through the court.
This was a match where the dominating captain Siddall was able to earn a well deserved rest and Clare Higham went into the GD and showed the improvement that has been made in both her confidence and her basic skills since stepping into the squad a year ago. She hassled and created many turnovers for both McFarlane and Ryan to capitalise on, giving Mavericks more attacking opportunities. The fourtth quarter demonstrated that consistency and concentration is still required but plenty of positives to develop as the squad prepares for the Sky Sports Special Loughborough Lightning match on Monday 3rd December at the Hertfordshire Sports Village.
