A business, dogmatic like approach to this game resulted in some positive creative attacking play that produced this emphatic score line. The coaching team were able to continue to work with different combinations; Michelle Hall paired up effectively with Louisa Brownfield and this introduced a different pace and timing enabling there to be some quick interactions between them and the two centre court players; Jones and Atkinson. Thunder's shooters were combining well and taking their shots anywhere in the circle this demanded the Mavericks defence to alter their play and force the ball to be played in the air so as to capitalise on their additional height.
Changes at half time brought three Mavericks players off the bench; Gemma Wiseman who had a good game at GA last week found herself as WA pairing up with Karen Atkinson and Monique Wood going into the shooter position. As each match progresses the recently transferred players are settling and blending in well. Clare Elsley at WD did an excellent job in forcing the attack into the corners and either turning over the ball or giving Siddall and Newton intercepting opportunities.
The score line is not important but the way the squad played was important as they go into the next phase of the competition; confidence in each other is growing and the demand by the players themselves to improve is there so with a two week training period before the Loughborough game there is an ideal time to push on in both skills and game training.
Mavericks face Loughborough Lightning away on Monday 26th February 2008.
