It was a brand new competition ….the first round of the 2008 Play offs Mavericks had to win to get through… for the last two years Mavericks have met Bath in the final and this time one team was not going to be involved.
A very slow start by both sides with Mavericks making 4 turnovers but not capitalising on one. This was to the picture of the match as Bath’s defence continued to rattle Mavericks.
Mavericks was always slightly ahead but in the second quarter Bath began to regroup and attack the game leaving it one goal difference at half time. In the third quarter Mavericks found their confidence and the 16-6 quarter score demonstrated what Mavericks is capable of.
Amanda Newton and Naomi Siddall were working well together with the additional solid defending work by Clare Elsely and Debbie Jones increased the turnovers and gave Mavericks the impetus they needed to take the game. Not a resounding performance but it gives Mavericks a place in the second play off where they meet Northumbria.
Mavericks are under no illusions that Northumbria will come out stronger than last Mondays encounter and will have their regular 7 back on the court for the match on the 29th March in Sheffield .
A great match to watch out for …..the winner of this match reaches the final to play Loughborough Lightning on April 5th!
