MAVERICKS V LEEDS CARNEGIE

TV Treat for Mavericks Fans!

14th December 2009
Result 54-31

Hertfordshire Mavericks hosted Leeds at their first home TV match and as both teams had won their initial match the spectators both young and old were in for a tough game. Leeds had a mixture of talented youth and experienced players. The Mavericks squad were very aware that the experienced players were in key positions.

The game started in Mavericks favour; Camilla Buchanan showing that her improved fitness was to benefit her in the WD position; four interceptions in as many minutes meant that Mavericks could attack and at the end of the first quarter the score was 14-7. In spite of Ama Agbeze’s reach and Jo Davies very tight one on one marking, patience by Laurelle Borck and Karen Atkinson enabled the gaps to be found as they started the 2nd quarter. However Leeds also started showing equal determination and minute by minute they pegged back the goals and forced Mavericks to clog the space and stumble in their attack. At half time the score was 23-17 in Mavericks favour however Leeds had taken this quarter by one goal.

A stern talk as well as some changes in the Mavericks squad instilled a concentration amongst the squad; Hazel Schofield linked well with Amanda Newton who has an enormous capacity to communicate exactly what is required whilst on court to work in a cohesive unit with an immediate partnership turnover off Leeds centre pass. Naida Hutchinson who is now starting to look gradually more comfortable in the GD/WD role linked well with Laurelle Borck and 3 driving interceptions enabled this quarter to be decisive 16-4 goal margin. Vicklyn Joseph knew she was in a close match against Agbeze and learnt to mark more strongly when Ama took a flying interception meant for Karen Atkinson. Karen's strength and control coped with this knock as she continued to drive and lose her opponent. Vicklyn learnt quickly and did not let this happen again and was able to receive some tightly fought aerial feeds and convert them into goals. Several physical encounters as Mavericks strove to turnover more passes meant that Camilla Buchanan returned to centre whilst Laurelle nursed a minor injury. Going into the final quarter Naomi Stenhouse replaced Amanda Newton and in only her second match back in the Mavericks colours she showed evidence of turnovers and starting to command the defensive circle. Flat fast feeds and a continual drive towards goal enabled the final quarter to be a 15-10 advantage and a 54-31 win. The spectators had had an opportunity to watch an exciting match so early in the season. Mavericks returns to training to look at what happened in the 2nd quarter where Leeds displayed the skills and strengths that they are capable of.
