Sky Sports Filming!Hazel Schofield
13th October 2008

On Friday I travelled to the EIS in Sheffield, as Mavericks’ representative, to take part in the filming of Sky TV‘s opening sequence for their coverage of the NSL. For a player who has been 'off the netball scene' for three years, I was to have a little taste of just how much the game has moved on since I last played at this level.

Now, I imagine that some of the girls from the other teams had grandiose ideas of what their first TV work may involve.  Bright lights, gorgeous co-stars and an assistant pampering to your every whim!  I, on the other hand, had watched the TV series Extras, so I thought I knew what I was getting myself in to.

The day started with individual shots, there's going to be a little sequence of events that unfolds, but I'll have to keep that a surprise.  Looking mean and moody, whilst struggling to see because of the gloomy lighting was pretty difficult.  We each had to do a number of takes for each move, to make sure that the producers would have enough angles of us when putting the sequence together.  After all these takes, my respect for actors and actresses grew – just how they don’t look bored filming a 3 hour movie is beyond me.  We finished with group shots of all the Franchise players passing the ball to each other and a group shot of us walking toward the camera.

One surprise of the day was to be reunited with someone I knew from my days playing in Australia, Carla Dzwioki, she's playing for Northumbria this year.  She's also told me that another girl I played with in Australia is playing with Leeds Carnegie.  Looks like we will be in for an exciting season I only hope that the opening sequence does justice to the netball!
