Welcome to the Ultimate Netball Club

4th February 2020

12 of the u15 long squad travelled to Manchester to take on Thunder in their first match against a franchise opposition. After an early start, the squad travelled up on the coach together.

The girls watched the u17s play a brilliant game beforehand. Putting on the brand new dresses was exciting, followed by a team talk. A warm up was led by the captain (Caitlin Hellen) and vice captain (Darcie Everitt).

Thunder started strong in the first quarter, with very slick attack. They turned over  ball consecutively off the Mavericks centre pass and transitioned to goal. Despite things not going in the girls favour, they fought back and some passages of play started to work, feeding into our shooters- Molly and Melita.

In the second quarter we started with the same starting 7 who all hustled hard against a strong side. The attack had to work hard to break the effective Thunder defence on centre passes. The defence did a great job at disrupting the movement in the circle and turned over ball. The mid court worked so hard and gave opportunities for both shooters.

The third quarter included some changes to the side. Mavericks put in place a new centre pass set up, drawing the defence wide, which was effective. The defence were outstanding and turned over a lot of ball in this quarter which enabled a good transition through court. With two new shooters on court, Mavericks tried different feeds which were successful. This was a great quarter drawing 10-10.

In the final quarter, Mavericks continued to try and slow down the Thunder play and put a lot of pressure on. The mid court worked as a unit to hit circle edge for the shooters.

The final score was 68-36 to a strong thunder side. Despite the loss, the girls had a great experience and have learnt a lot.
