Welcome to the Ultimate Netball Club

18th February 2020

After a tight last few games, the U21s had trained well during the week, testing out multiple combinations.

Saracens Mavericks U21s started with:

GK - Odiri Aitrene

GD - Aliyah Zaranyika

WD - Eliza Barclay

C - Beth Ecuyer Dale

WA - Phoebe Cadogan

GA - Chloe Essam

GS - Paige McCalla

From the start, the game proved it was going to be a physical encounter. Possession would be key as goal scoring was low. A big collision resulted in mid quarter changes Amy on for Eliza at WD. With much of the quarter falling with centre passes, a few turnover saw Pulse take the lead. The quarter ended 11-7.

Having collected ourselves at the break and with coaching input we returned to court. Trends from the first continued into the second, with every ball being highly contested. Another big collision resulted in another mid quarter change which saw Amy to GK and Hannah on at WD. The remainder of the quarter played out goal for goal with Pulse leading 22-17 at the half.

With a change in style required and an opportunity to bring on fresh legs. Changes into the third quarter saw Brit on at GS and Paige pushing out to GA. Defensively, as Mavericks did throughout the game, we continued to disrupt the opposing attack. Treasuring any turnover presented to us. Pulse however pushed on, punishing any slight errors to end the quarter leading 38-30.

With 15 minutes to play and although Pulse held the lead, Mavericks knew a couple of turnovers would bring this game back. Changes from the bench returned Chloe E to court at WA, Beth to WD and Phoebe C to C. Mavericks continued to play right down to the final whistle, with a huge effort to ensure tight defence was applied throughout the court. Despite all efforts Pulse extended their lead and maintained their centres, finishing with a 56-45 win to the opposition.

The squad although disappointed with the result, will collect themselves and return to training in preparation to play Wasps in a few weeks.
