Welcome to the Ultimate Netball Club

27th February 2020

Sunday 23rd February saw 13 of our u15s head to Coventry to play the strong u17b Wasps team. We all knew it was going to be a tough match but with many of our squad making their first appearances in a Mavericks dress, we were keen to impress. Taking the court first was:

GS - Claudia Kerry-Rodger

GA - Eleanor Moore

WA - Lucy Kay

C - Rosie Fordham

WD - Monika Marino

GD - Jade Straker

GK - Lily Costen

Pumped up and ready, Mavericks took full advantage of gaining the first centre pass, taking it to goal, and through the safe hand of Moore, Mavericks made it 1-0. Momentum built early, as defence worked hard turning over ball allowing the score to swiftly become 4-1 in Mavericks favour. However, Wasps weren’t going down without a fight and soon gained control.

Some great play by the mid court duo Kay and vice-captain Fordham, allowed for many opportunities at goal. Down the other end, pressure was put on the Wasps shooters early by defence Straker and Costen. But ultimately, they took the lead going into the next 12 minutes with the score standing at 8-10.

Sadly, Fordham went down with an injury at the end of the first 12 minutes meaning she was replaced by Captain Groves, but no other changes were made. The shooting combo of Kerry-Rodger and Moore began to settle sinking their shots, but wasps still managed to pull away further. This 5th ended with wasps still ahead at 15-20.

Going into the 3rd period of play, changes were made to bring on fresh legs and allow Mavericks to maintain the intensity of the first 2 fifths. Coming into defence were youngsters Everitt and Boniface who worked tirelessly forcing errors from the Wasps attack. Subair at WD brought the ball through to the attackers with ease. The new shooting combo of Henn and Clark added plenty of height to the circle, settling down and rewarding the hard work of the whole team. Marino was moved into Centre and gave an amazing performance providing swift movements and precise feeds into the shooters.

Going into the last 12 minutes, Mavericks were 38-32 down. More changes were made and after a few words from coaches, the team were ready give it their all and give one last push at closing the gap. Mavericks heads never dropped which was helped by the immense support from the bench throughout the match.

The comeback was on. Nerves, pressure, cheering. Mavericks were on Wasps tail. We were 6 behind, then only 1. The hall was booming, everyone was shouting encouragement and praise.  But the steady heads of the Wasps players meant that they held out for the win of 43-41 in what ended up being an extremely exciting game of netball. We took away plenty of positives but also lots to learn and improve from for our next outing.
