MATCH REPORT | SARACENS MAVERICKS U17S 37 - 37 WASPS U17S

26th February 2020

On Sunday 23rd of February the u17s Saracens Mavericks travelled to Coventry to take on the u17s Wasps team at Bablake School. The team was excited to get out on the court and put out a good performance away from home.

Our starting seven was:

GS - Tiana Ubesio

GA - Charlotte Cox

WA - Talia Roche

C - Zoe Allanson

WD - Justine Sansom

GD - Darcie Everitt

GK - Alyssa Rose

The game began in Wasps’ possession and with pressure from Allanson on the centre pass Mavericks made their route to goal difficult. Despite the pressure from Everitt and Rose, Wasps were able to put themselves on the board first. Unfortunately, Mavericks lost possession of their centre pass and awarded Wasps their second goal. When the defence found their flow, we were able to score 4 goals without reply thanks to the accuracy of our shooters Ubesio and Cox and the patience of Roche. It was clear to us that the Wasps shooters were on form as they sunk another 2 goals. As the first period was ending the ball went back and forth, scoring off our respective centre passes. By the end of the first period we led by 2 goals with a score of 8-6.

The second period saw no positional changes and Wasps started this period with increased intensity as they came out and scored 3 goals after the break. On the next Wasps centre pass Rose showed off her defensive capabilities and took a clean interception from the GS. Allanson and Roche were able to bring the ball safely through court to allow our shooters to level out the score to 9 a piece. The strength of the Wasps defence gave them the opportunity to take the lead at the end of the second period with a score of 13-14.

There was a change to the line-up as Mavericks took to the court for the third period. Groves came on as C and showed control and precision when feeding the new shooting partnership of Acons and Cox to increase our score to 16, with Wasps trailing on 14. The new circle defence of Adewumi and Smith hustled the Wasps shooters, with the help of powerhouse Sansom applying pressure on the circle edge, to keep the gap of two goals throughout the period. With the lift in intensity and quality of netball the third period ended with Mavericks leading 21-19.

For the fourth period Ubesio returned to the court as GS and Acons moved out to GA. With the help of Allanson as WA the new shooting partnership was able to score 4 goals on the trot. Wasps responded by scoring 3 in a row, but their momentum was slowed by Rose and Smith when they bagged themselves an interception which was taken to goal. This period ended with the score being 31-27 to Mavericks.

Entering the last period with the lead gave us the motivation to push on and finish on a good period of netball. Cox returned to court as WA and fed some great balls into the shooters. Groves demonstrated her outstanding fitness and pushed on to take some flying interceptions with Smith backing her up all the time. Ubesio worked the back space well to receive the overs into the shooting circle. Similarly, at the other end the Wasps attack utilised the back space but the extraordinary reach of Everitt allowed Mavericks to regain possession. However, some mistakes in the closing minutes of the game saw Wasps score 3 goals, making the score 34-36 in favour of Mavericks. With Wasps applying pressure throughout the court they forced some errors in the centre third and the game remained close. Wasps then scored 2 goals to make the game level once again, but we came back and scored our 37th goal with a minute to go. The amazing efforts of Sansom, Everitt and Rose were overcome by the accuracy of the Wasps shooters who made it level at 37. Our final attempt at goal was denied and the game ended on a draw.

On this occasion we let the win slip from us due to a lack of concentration in the final period, however we showed that we could perform to a high standard at times. We had passages of outstanding teamwork which we can now draw upon and improve on for the next game.
