7th of March 2020 Saracens Mavericks U17’s came up against Severn Stars at our home venue the Hertfordshire Sports village.
Pressure on after winning the first centre pass to utilise the advantage saw a promising speedy first phase driving through Stars defence straight to the goal end. Unfortunately handling error denied Saracens Mavericks the goal allowing Stars to regain possession. Keen to take advantage Stars reacted by taking ball to goal end, not before some valiant play from the Saracens Mavericks defensive unit of fisher, Pawlaczek and Andrews shutting down the circle edge but finally conceding the first goal to Stars.
A focused Saracens Mavericks centre court determined to regain control quickly won 2 turnover balls and great work on the circle edge with Ubesio and Dixon secured 2 additional goals. An excellent comeback from Stars answered with a quick return goal but were denied another by and strong rebound from Fisher resulting in another Saracens Mavericks goal. Both Stars and Saracens Mavericks showed some excellent passages of play, but Stars strong attacking end drove through the Saracens Mavericks defence bringing the score line back to 7-6. Saracens Mavericks answered by digging deep with a series of turnover ball and interceptions increasing their lead. Both teams showed equal bursts of promising attacking play with impressive interceptions and turnovers. Now to focus the 2nd quarter and the fluidity of the game.
End of Q1 score 13-9 to Saracens Mavericks.
In Q2 Severn Stars turned on the pressure with a focused attacking drive. Despite Groves and Pawlaczeks impressive efforts to shut down the centre court Stars secured the goal. Saracens Mavericks rising to the challenge pushed forward with a run of dominating centre court play securing turnover ball working through court with combinations of GS Ubesio, GA Ecuyer-Dale, WA Roach C Groves. Andrews speed of pace and fast ball with Groves successfully penetrated the Stars defence to Ecuyer-Dale and Ubesio both landing a run of goals. Stars responded by some excellent attacking play but the Saracens Mavericks defence GK Fisher, GD Pawlaczek, WD Andrews did an outstanding job dominating the defensive circle edge getting rebounds and forcing errors with multiple interceptions against the strong Severn Stars on point shooters. A flow of Mavericks and stars centre passes shows strengths and errors on both sides with Saracen Mavericks taking control with a 17-10 lead followed by a burst of strength with great feeding from Groves and Roach and interceptions at both ends of the court, Mavericks increased their lead to 32-21.
Quarter 3 brought on some fresh legs for Saracens Mavericks GS Dixon, GA Ecuyer-Dale, WA White, C Finlay, WD Andrews, GD Kershaw and GK Rose. Severn stars determined to turn the game around showed an impressive defensive edge to their game, successfully shutting down Saracens Mavericks attempts to circle edge with their strong defence successfully dominating control of the post, getting the rebound and forcing the long balls which were intercepted by their strong WD on the circle edge. Saracens Mavericks defence however responded to Stars drive with equal vigour with Roses reachy edge getting rebounds and multiple clean interceptions. Kershaw and Andrews also impressed shutting down options inside and outside the circle making it hard for Severn Stars to feed the shooters. Stars fought back shutting down centre court, but Saracens Mavericks determination successfully worked the ball to circle edge with feeds from White and Finlay going to goal. After picking up our feet from the slow start in the third quarter we were still in the lead 43-38 but with the gap lessoned things to work on in Q4.
Final quarter came on GS Ubesio, GA White, WA Roach, C Groves, WD Kershaw, GD Fisher and GK Rose which allowed Mavericks to change the dynamics and pace of the game after a shaky quarter 3. The final quarter felt more intense than any other quarter as both teams were digging deep. Our attacking end was very patient in attack as well as defence working the ball around the circle edge and resetting the ball to the third line if something wasn’t on  showing resilience when getting the ball closer to the post which we achieved with amazing decision making and ball placement from Groves, Roach and Finlay who came on at C towards the end of the quarter who were awesome when doing a world class centre pass (3 passes and a goal). Severn Stars shooters stepped up their game with their immaculate accuracy and movement around the circle with their strong holds challenged our defence at the start of the quarter. Although the partnership between Fisher, Rose and Kershaw helped force errors not to mention some amazing interceptions from Kershaw which went to goal their defensive through court helped the attacking combination work the ball around keeping it safe, so Stars doesn’t intercept it.
Through our hard work and determination, we were able to come out with a win 57-50. After putting up a fight against Severn Stars strong squad we have a few things to work on in training before out next game but ending on a high note our communications on the court as well as off the court was outstanding as it really helped motivate the players and our determination to push for a bigger goal difference throughout the game which resulted in our win.
Final score Saracens Mavericks 57 Severn Stars 50.
