MATCH REPORT: Wasps Netball U21 58-55 Saracens Mavericks U21

13th February 2019

Written by Paige McCalla, Captain.

Monday night saw Saracens Mavericks U21’s take on the undefeated Wasps Netball U21’s at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, ahead of the two side’s Superleague Game.

Knowing that this was going to be our hardest match yet, Saracens Mavericks went in with the game plan that if we did the basics well and played for each other, then the result would take care of itself.

The team always wanted to make sure that we stayed close to them score wise and that a win would be a bonus.

After a rocky first two quarters with Wasps coming out hard from all angles, Mavericks were not as close as we wanted to be, but after a change in the shooting circle with McCalla going into GS and Butt into GA, a big momentum shift followed as Mavericks came out with a bang in the Q3.

Having an easier target to feed and extra movement provided by Butt, allowed the attack to convert a host of chances after the defence continued to produce turnover ball. It meant that Mavericks won the third quarter.

After another slow start to the fourth, Mavericks had to dig deep in order to bring the score closer, but with several forced errors from Wasps, the away side were able to push their hosts all the way and an incredible end saw Mavericks narrowly lose out 58-55.

Even with this loss, the U21’s have a lot to be proud of and we look onwards and upwards onto our next game with is home against London Pulse on Sunday 24 February.
