MATCH REPORTS: MAVERICKS U19S VS LONDON PULSE & MANCHESTER THUNDER

14th April 2019

Written by U19s Captain - Katie Fisher

This weekend Mavericks U19 competed in what was our last two matches of a challenging and competitive season during the NPL closing tournament.

We faced London Pulse in our first match of the weekend. We began the game with great determination to push Pulse to their limits and ended the first quarter only an intercept behind with the score of 12-14.

The second quarter proved more demanding with Pulse’s tall shooter challenging our defensive unit allowing them to pull away with a half time result of 24-35. After switching our team around at half time, we came back all guns blazing with some amazing through court play from attackers and turnover from defence.

Unluckily, we were unable to change the score around in the second half and finished with a loss of 48-65.

Our second match of the competition was against Manchester Thunder who currently held the top of the league position.

We knew this game would be tough but nevertheless we came out strong, putting into play everything we had focused on in training. We challenged every ball and put immense pressure on Thunder’s attack resulting in a draw of 11-11 after the first quarter.

Mavericks carried this intensity through to the second quarter and with incredibly accurate shooting from our attackers we finished the first half with a draw of 23-23.

Despite our remarkable work ethic thunder were able to pull away slightly in the third quarter finishing it 6 goals up with an overall score of 36-30. Regardless of being slightly behind we continued to push and challenge Thunder until the very last blow of the whistle; we focused largely on taking our centre passes to goal and attempting to disturb theirs.

Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a win but are extremely proud of our performance finalising the match with a score of 37-49.

This season has been an incredible journey and the improvements we as a team and individually- have made each game has been immense.

Congratulations to Bella Baylis for Player of the Match vs Pulse and Jasmine Nightingale for Player of the Match vs Thunder.
