Saracens Mavericks U21s ready for season opener

11th January 2019

This weekend our U21s finally get their 2019 campaign underway with a double header at the EIS Sheffield.

We caught up with head coach Sachel Grant for her thoughts on the season ahead.

“Three months of pre-season is coming to an end - game day is fast approaching for the Under 21s, the last of the competition squads to get their season started.

We travel to Sheffield and have two games facing Surrey Storm at 10am and then Severn Stars at 1.30pm.

Last season we beat Storm by one goal in the last three seconds of the game and Stars got the better of us in the first game of the season. Both teams have quality in all areas of the court.

We have a different coaching team this year with Lesley Tischler as assistant and we have had the privilege of training sessions alongside the Vitality Superleague team and their coaching staff.

The squad looks very different to last season with several players leaving for new challenges, University and travelling. We have a blend of experience and youth, with several Under 19s stepping up to this level.

The U21 league is extremely challenging with many players knocking on the door of a Superleague franchise or even part of their squad. Every game will require the best from all 12 players of Saracens Mavericks.

We have worked extremely hard on being a team that would give everything on court, for themselves and each other. This season we are determined in each game we give performances that we can be proud of.

I am also delighted that we have a very strong leadership group with Paige McCalla, Tara Jones and Phoebe Cadogan.

I am excited what this great group of players and staff can do each week - leaving everything on court.”

Director of Netball at Saracens Mavericks, Kat Ratnapala added: “It has been great to watch this U21 squad develop over the past few months and Sachel and her coaching team have done a great job to get them prepared for this weekend and for the season ahead.”
