Saracens Mavericks take The Lyn Gunson Trophy 2019

7th December 2019

Saracens Mavericks took to the road and headed to Bath for their first preseason friendly tournament of the season, to compete for the chance to win the Lyn Gunson trophy.

With the majority of the squad fit and available to play, it was exciting to finally get a look at the squad for the 2020 season, competing against 4 teams within the Vitality Superleague plus the all men’s side Knights.

Playing shortened quarters of 8 minutes, instead of the normal 15 minutes, Saracens Mavericks started their campaign against Sirens, after a slightly slow start, the squad started to connect well and worked hard to come away with a 30-19 win.

Knights brought a different challenge with their dynamic and off marking ability to close down space in defence and open up space in attack, Knights took the win 35-32, giving Saracens Mavericks their first and only loss of the weekend.

Next up was Guildford based Surrey Storm, with former shooters of Saracens Mavericks, Karyn Bailey and Sophie Hankin. Connections throughout the court, it was a great display of this team potential and in Kadeen Corbin and Chloe Essam’s link in the 2nd half exciting the home and away fans alike. Finishing with a classy performance and scoreline 51-26.

Sunday morning brought the top of the table clash vs Team Bath, with Bath finishing Saturday with 3 wins under their belt. It was a physical and well matched game with Saracens Mavericks coming out on top, finishing 37-21.

The final round of the tournament was against Severn Stars 36-29 before there was a short 15 break before they met Team Bath again in the final.

Starting with Fisher, K Corbin, Lees, S Corbin, Marshall, Trip & Quashie, Saracens Mavericks had a narrow 1 goal lead all the way to 3 quarter time, when stern words by Ratnapala and Buchanan gave them the edge and the squad came away victors with a 33-27 win.

Head Coach Ratnapala said “Having been a student at the University of Bath and having worked under Lyn Gunson, she was a massive influence in both mine and Camilla lives so to win this trophy means a huge amount. I’m really proud of the squad this weekend, we came here with no expectations other than to have fun, enjoy the connections and build some rapport before the start of the season, the trophy was the icing on the cake.”
