Round 5: Hertfordshire Mavericks V Manchester Thunder

Hertfordshire Mavericks 48 Manchester Thunder 57

Hertfordshire Mavericks wanted a better start to this match than we had shown in previous games and wanted to capitalise on being the home team with such fantastic home support. And here we delivered! Our team had a dream start against Thunder depriving them of their attacking moves and producing some exciting attacking play of our own. We overwhelmed the Thunder team and went into the first 1/4 a healthy 7 goals up 15-8.

Thunder were soon forced to make a change to their attacking line up. This change up made a difference to Thunder who began to claw back the match. Mavericks attack needed to work very hard for their goals, often requiring a number of passes before reaching a shooting option. Mavericks led at half time but with a reduced lead,  the score 26 - 24.

The second half of the match remained hard fought, and in a very physical game, a number of players hit the deck throughout. Sophie Hankin came on at GA and continued the good work George Fisher had done in the first half. Despite the efforts of the Mavericks players Thunder edged the third and fourth quarters, and whilst the game was closely fought Mavericks error rate became just too costly in the end.  The final score was Mavericks 48 Thunder 57

With only one day between this match and the next versus Team Bath the team debriefed constructively and positively and are looking forward to getting back to winning ways away from home.
