Lightning Threatens to Strike But Mavericks Make it Two from Two V Loughborough in VNSL 2016

30th March 2016

Vitality Netball Superleague

Round 9 : Hertfordshire Mavericks V Loughborough Lightning

Hertfordshire Mavericks 51 Team Northumbria 48

After a close encounter with Lightning last time out, and with them needing a win to try to compete for a play off place we knew they would come out firing. They made a good start with Corbin and Proscovia working well together in attack. Mavericks made too many handing errors in the first 1/4 giving possession to LL who took their chances well and won the first quarter 15-11

Mavericks came out better in the second quarter, and although were behind, the squad had faith that they would stay in touch with the game and get stronger as the match developed. Keable and Guscoth started to get into their stride against the Lightning, attack who were forced to pass the ball back more and more. Half time score 27-22 to Lightning.

Ella Clark entered the game, in her first VNSL 2016 runout for Mavericks, towards the end of the second half and linked in well with Sammy Wallace. Clark's experience showed immediately and  proved to be a handful for Agbeze and the Lightning defensive unit. Wallace was able to take ball over Tripp's head and Mavericks started their move back to winning the match.

The second half also saw Williams enter the game at C for Mavericks and the team became more and more confident winning the ball, making better decisions than their opponents.  Clark and Wallace who had never played together before today found a rhythm in attack and caused problems for the circle defence. Mavericks were able to bring the ball through the court with much more flow and won the quarter convincingly taking the scores level at 36-36

Going into the fourth quarter, the body language of the teams showed with Mavericks becoming more confident by the minute. Mavericks took the lead for the first time in the quarter and held on to it trusting each other and helping each other on court. Final score...... 51-48 Mavericks

Head Coach,Sam Bird said "We knew Lightning would come out hard and were prepared for that. We didn't panic when they went ahead, as we know we are strong for a whole hour and have players that can problem solve on court. Part of this year's ethos has been about allowing players to develop through match play by giving them a clear game plan and structure and then encouraging them to lead and adapt through the game to close out tight matches.  The players did this very well tonight and I'm proud of the character they showed"
