Mavericks Fly to The Top of The League with Win Over Jets

Vitality Netball Superleague

Round 12 : Hertfordshire Mavericks V Yorkshire Jets

Hertfordshire Mavericks 54 Yorkshire Jets 34

Mavericks were happy to be back at our home venue with the fans support as loud as ever. Wanting to set the tone of the match early on, by taking command of the game, we started strongly with George Fisher and Ella Clark linking well in attack. The defence was solid through the court, putting Yorkshire Jets under pressure from the start. Flying to a 7-0 lead, we took the first quarter convincingly winning 15 - 8.

The starting 7 stayed the same for Mavericks in Q2 whilst Jets made changes to their shooting end bringing on De Toit. In this quarter, Jets played with more cohesion causing Mavericks to adapt our play. However our ability to keep winning ball from Jets from all areas of the court meant that Mavericks were able to extend our lead to 27 - 16. The attack's shooting was on point again with Fisher and Clark averaging 87% accuracy for the half.

Changes at half time saw a new attacking line up for Mavericks. Wallace, Hankin and Williams all entered the game. Our game plan was to keep the momentum going and to extend the lead. Guscoth and Keable were instrumental in making this a reality by taking intercepts at will and with the Mavericks players in front setting them up with constant pressure on Jets. Wallace had an outstanding quarter scoring 17/17 shots. Mavericks took the quarter 17 - 9, extending the lead at three quarter time to 44-25.

The final quarter saw Guscoth continue her flawless execution, again stealing so many passes she was deservedly awarded Vitality Player of the Match by SKY SPORTs who televised the match. The final score was 54 - 34 to Mavericks.

Head Coach Sam Bird had this to say: "I was really pleased with the performance this evening. We tried a couple of new attacking combinations which worked well. Other teams have had very close matches with Jets so to win by 20 goals is a positive indication that we have great depth and adaptability in the squad."
