Vitality Netball Superleague

Round 10 : Hertfordshire Mavericks V Team Northumbria

Hertfordshire Mavericks 64 Team Northumbria 40

After a two week break for us, it was great to finally be back in match day mode. With a home sell out crowd, we were looking forward to carrying on where we left off with a convincing performance and a solid win.

We were looking for a strong first quarter and the players did not disappoint with Mavericks dominating through every area of the court. Keable and Guscoth shut down the attack whilst the shooters Fisher and Hankin maintained their high accuracy and Mavericks stormed into a 7 goal lead winning the first quarter 17- 10.

The second quarter saw Team Northumbria present a more physical challenge to Mavericks and disrupted our play to an extent in a quarter marked by lots of whistle from the umpires and a game without much flow from either side. The half time score was 27-20 to Mavericks.

Changes at half time for Mavericks brought a new energy to the team which saw Fisher come out to GA and Sammy Wallace enter the game at GS. Williams came on at WD with May moving to C. Wallace scored an outstanding 13/14 goals and Fisher 6/6 whilst at the other end Guscoth and Keable were turning ball over for Mavericks in the circle at will. A punishing third quarte,r with Mavericks winning by 9 goals, saw the lead stretch to 46 -30.

The final quarter saw Sutherland come on at WD and Hankin return to GA. Mavericks pushed on demanding more goals and quality play right to the final whistle. Sam Bird also made changes during the quarter which saw Artman and Oyesola go into the defending circle for Mavs. The back three players all just 18 years old were a pleasure to watch and turned over Northumbria ball a number of times. Mavericks pushed on winning the last quarter 18-10 making the final score 64-40.

Head Coach Sam Bird commented: "It was great to get back to playing in the Vitality NSL at home and I was delighted that the players demonstrated a solid understanding of the game plan, they supported each other on the court, and all 12 players showed their individual quality and ability to fit into the side and perform."
