Mavericks Unveil New Zealand Icon Robyn Broughton as First Director of Netball

26th July 2016

Mavericks Netball are delighted to announce the appointment of Robyn Broughton as our first Director of Netball with effect from 1st August 2016. Robyn, an icon of the game in New Zealand, returns to the club following a season as Assistant Coach in 2016.

Franchise Director, Gloria Keech said “Robyn is a natural and experienced leader. She has coached at the highest level with huge success and worked with many elite athletes nurturing their talent and helping them to fulfil their potential. At Mavericks we have always focused on talent development so Robyn is the perfect fit in all ways.  I am excited that Robyn has agreed to join Mavericks as our first Director of Netball and I’m certain she will enable the club to make a real impact in a very competitive Vitality Netball Superleague.”

In New Zealand, Robyn served as Head Coach of Southern Sting for 10 years winning that first franchise competition seven times. Later she coached Southern Steel and Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship; coached the Silver Ferns to Fastnet victory in England in 2010 and was Assistant Coach of the Silver Ferns between 2000 and 2002.

Robyn has also been heavily involved in Secondary School and Age Group netball where she has fostered young talent.

She is enthusiastic about her appointment saying:

“I am grateful to Mavericks for selecting me for this new role and after having experience of the supportive environment in the franchise last year, I am now keen to continue this involvement. There is a pool of talented players and I am confident we can work towards success in the SuperLeague.”

As Director of Netball, Robyn will also assume the role of Head Coach.  Mavericks would like to extend our thanks to Sam Bird, the Mavericks Head Coach for the last two seasons.  Sam led Mavericks to top four positions in the Superleague in both years, reaching the Grand Final in 2015.

The rest of the new Mavericks coaching team will be announced in the coming weeks.
