Mavericks Youth Take Pulse to Secure Top Four Finish

24th March 2017

Today Hertfordshire Mavericks travelled to the Copper Box Arena to face London Pulse.  Both teams had to put on a top performance as the winner would bag themselves a position in the top four and would be playing off against Manchester Thunder in the first semi final next Saturday 25 March.

With Parker GS, Kelk GA, Satwick WA, Liverseidge C, Ecuyer-Dale WD, Rattu GD and Adio GK, the starting seven was named and the game began.  A frantic start meant both teams had gained and lost possession, but it was quickly put right with a composed shot from Phoebe Parker.  Now settled, Mavericks came out strong by forcing error and converting them into goals.  The quarter ended 16-8 to Mavericks.

Only one change for Mavericks saw Fleming come on as GA.  Susie Liverseidge’s speedy break through the mid-court and Georgia Satwick sending the long ball in proved that the attack weren't shy of hard work.  A tactical change from Pulse made our defenders adapt to the new pace of the game.  Their solid defence and a last run of play for Pulse helped them close the gap at half time, Mavericks still lead 27-22.

Half time changes meant that Drakeford-Lewis to GS, Ecuyer-Dale up to C and Jones on at WD.  A big push from defence allowed Ellie Rattu and Hali Adio to pick up ball in the circle.  It was a little sticky trying to get the ball to transition from defence to attack, but once down there the attack used the circle very well and with some great shooting, Mavericks extended their lead to ten goals.  The quarter ended 39-31.

With an eight goal lead the last changes were made, Liverseidge WA, Kelk GS, Drakeford-Lewis GA and Rowley WD.  Mavericks had the confidence going in to the last quarter, but they couldn't let their quality drop.  A couple of missed shots were instantly corrected with some great rebounding under the post.  A six goal lead in the last five minutes surely meant that Mavericks would take the all important win. Awesome composure from Mavericks took them across the finish line; they took the win 51-43!

Hertfordshire Mavericks would like to thank London Pulse for the competitive game and we wish them all the best in the rest of the season.
