The Night the CopperBox Turned Black & Purple - London Live - Mavericks 55 Storm 50

6th March 2016

Vitality Netball Superleague

Round 7: Hertfordshire Mavericks V Surrey Storm

Hertfordshire Mavericks 55 Surrey Storm 50

London Live always provides a great spectacle for the fans but HM were business like in our approach to this match. We were rightly confident of our ability to win this away fixture. We have performed well through the first rounds of the Vitality NSL with the player combinations working well. The team spirit, willingness to work together and to keep improving as a group is excellent. Hertfordshire Mavericks knew we had to turn The Copperbox into our venue to play well.

The first quarter was a tight affair, but the tone was set by HM with our shooters settling first and taking some great feeds. At the other end Storm's shooters struggled with our defensive pressure. The first 1/4 ended 10:10

We were confident we could expose Storm in the second 1/4 and indeed we effectively took the game away from Storm. The Mavericks shooting was exceptional in the second 1/4. We gave our shooters 21 shooting opportunities and took a 7 goal lead. Again the defensive work from Johansson and May in the mid court was outstanding, setting up turnover ball for the players behind. We stretched our lead to 27:20 Mavericks at half time.

Storm made changes in the second half, but the players that started for Hertfordshire Mavericks, having played so well, deserved to stay on. We wanted to show we had learned from the Thunder defeat that we could  take a lead and improve/hold it through to the end of the game. The coaches were pleased with patience of the players who kept their heads and maintained their form. Despite Storm making a number of changes, the lead remained 6 in Mavericks favour, going into the last 1/4 40-34.

The last quarter was closely fought but Mavericks discipline and focus held and the shooting remained on point. Sammy Wallace showed her world class ability playing well against both GK's scoring 40/44 for the game -91%.  The match ended with a tremendous roar from the Mavericks fans - final score 55-50 to Mavericks.

Head Coach, Sam Bird, said: "A good win for us tonight and I'm delighted the players hard work is paying off on the court. No time to sit back though as we have Celtic Dragons at home in 48 hours time and they have hit a run of good form. Thanks to the Mavericks fans for the fantastic support at the Copperbox, we are delighted to get a win for them and hope to keep on improving into the the second phase of the competition"
