VNSL Semi Final: Mavericks Give it Everything but go down by Two

4th May 2016

This year's semi final was a repeat fixture for last year's final and we were confident that we could beat Surrey Storm this time around. We had recognized that in previous performances we needed to maintain our form for the whole match and we put everything in place to try and do that in this match. Our pre match preparation and warm up had been leading to a strong first quarter performance and this match was no exception. We started well with some fine court play from the team taking the lead 13-11 at quarter time.

We kept our focus in the second quarter and the match was keenly contested by both teams. Intercepts were earned by fantastic marking and  our discipline through the court meant that we drew the second quarter going in leaders at half time 26-24

Storm had traditionally come back strong in the second half against us, so we remained focused on our half time talk and made a change at the defending end bringing on Oyesola to try and turn ball over for Mavericks. Oyesola did her job with the other defenders in turning Storm ball over, but we failed to capitalise on that possession in the attack, making handling errors under pressure. Storm took the third quarter by 3 leading by just 1 goal at 3/4 time 39-40.

The last quarter was hard fought with Mavericks players  trying everything to take the lead again, but the last quarter was also lost by just one goal, giving Storm victory over us 51-53. A heartbreaking loss to be so close to the final, is tough to take. The game was a competitive match of the such high quality, it could have gone either way, but today we just fell short. Huge thanks to our fantastic HM supporters who were at the game and those who supported us from afar.

Sam Bird "I'm devastated about this loss because I know how hard the players have worked all season for this opportunity to win the league. After months of preparations and weeks of top class performances its tough to go out by a 2 goal margin. The players have been a fantastic group to work with and along side. My special thanks to all the Mavs staff, coaches, manager, PA and filming, physio, sports psych, S&C  team all of who have worked towards trying to obtain the victory. It wasn't to be, and credit to Storm for edging the win against us. We have to pick ourselves up for the 3/4 playoff next Saturday and move on to produce one more top class performance to share with our fans."

Our final SuperLeague match of the season is this Saturday at the CopperBox.  First CP at 2.30.  We look forward to seeing many of you there (loud and in Purple as always) and for those of you not attending we will keep you up to date throughout on the game on our twitter feed @hertmavericks
