Hertfordshire Mavericks picked up our third win of the season this Saturday as we played host to Severn Stars. It was an entertaining match with plenty of momentum swings, but Mavericks were delighted to come out on top in the final quarter.

Starting Seven: Quashie (GK), Keable (GD), Everitt (WD), Drayne (C), Grant (WA), Drakeford-Lewis (GA), Joseph (GS)

Used Substitutes: Artman, Hankin, Morgan-Smith

The first quarter started with an uncharacteristic miss from Sophie Drakeford-Lewis, and this sluggishness was a theme of the opening exchanges; the visitors seemed the more alert of the two teams, and their superior shooting statistics saw them pull ahead early on.

Mavericks were having to work hard to get the ball into the circle, but towards the end of the quarter they started to find their rhythm and brought the score back to within one. Intelligent time management saw Mavericks score in the final seconds to retain the centre pass at the start of the second quarter.

In the second quarter, both sides were playing a high-energy, quick-passing game which was enthralling to watch. The teams went goal-for-goal for long periods, but by the end of the 15 minutes Mavericks began to assert their dominance with some creative passes and their trademark solid defence, stretching their lead to six at half-time.

But having worked so hard to get in front, the lead was thrown away just as quickly, as a series of unforced errors from Mavericks and incisive play from the Stars saw the visitors claw the score back. Mavericks scored just six times in the third quarter to give the Stars a 36-34 advantage heading into the final period.

Stars pushed onto a four goal lead with 10 minutes to go, but, in typical Mavericks style, the side in purple weren’t going down without a fight. Buoyed by the raucous Herts Uni crowd, the continuous midcourt pressure followed by a series of interceptions from Artman and Quashie in the circle gave the home side just enough possession to sneak one goal ahead with a minute to go. With the lead and time on their side, Mavericks were able to close out the win, Joseph scoring twice more to end the game with a 48-45 scoreline.

It was a brilliant win for Mavericks, and one that the fans at the Hertfordshire University Sports Village certainly enjoyed. We are back in action there on Easter Monday (17th April) as they play host to the Wasps - first centre pass is at 7:30pm.  But before that we are off to Bath on Friday 14th April!
