Laura's Impact!
5th March 2008

Sara Miller (Head of PE) presenting Laura with her award

Laura O'Mahony has had a successful season with the Mavericks Youth squad gaining court time and progressing her game, but other sporting events have also been happening away from netball.

Laura's school PE department nominated her for an award 'Most valuable contribution and impact from a sports official' going up against all the schools and colleges in Hertford & Ware. Unfortunately Laura could not attend the awards evening to collect her award personally as it was the same night as the Mavericks Youth versus West Midlands match where we drew with the top of the table team and Laura contributed to this result as she played half the match as WD.

The other sporting impact that Laura is having, is on the Handball court. The EIS sent her an email saying that her sporting history was good enough for her to get a trial for the World Class Hanball programme in Manchester. This program fast-tracks athletes who might hopefully be good enough for the Olympics in 2012. Suitable athletes can be sent off to Denmark to a Handball academy to train twice a day and in a good level of competition. Those Mavericks fans who have a good memory may remember that Abi Dewberry from the Mavericks senior squad was also picked up by Handball and went through a similar process.

There are a lot of netballers that are not only good at our fabulous game but excel in other areas. Well done to Laura on a good season, her sports award and being recognised by Handball for her potential!
